Is Racing Hard?
a long time ago, some neighborhood kids saw me working on minis and started drowning me with questions about racing bikes. The one that stuck with me was, "Is Racing Hard?" My response was, "Losing is easy!" Anyone can lose, when the green flag waves, just push the bike over to the wall. Winning on the other hand, takes a bit of everything. Preparation (physical, mechanical, and mental), effort, skill, and a fair bit of luck.
Fuel Pumps, Fuel Lights, Etc. for sv650 and sv1000
in the 1g and 2g world you have 3 possibilities 1g are all the same and not really compatible with anything other than 1g 2g sv650 and sv1000 are the same WITHIN THE YEAR. so 03/04 sv650 the parts are the same as 03/04 sv1000, and 05+sv650 the parts are the same as 05+sv1000 03/04 - single fuel thermistor, 3 prong white connector on the pump. turns on the idiot light at ~1gal remaining. No external resistor in the tail. 05+ - dual fuel thermistor, 4 prong brown connector on the pump. turns on the idiot light at ~1gal remaining....
Inventory Tracking and Tagging
One of the things that seems to always cause me a headache is that I never quite know whether on a specific bike I made or lost money, nor what bike a specific part may have come from. For very common stuff (seat latches for example) the source bike doesn't really matter since a part is a part, but for things like wiring harnesses, etc where the year and S vs N matters, this is really necessary. The other thing this can let me do is track what bikes are "paid off" and on which I've spent too much. Obviously...
Tire Date Codes
the oval on the sidewall of a tire tells you the "born on" date. The first 2 numbers are the week, the second 2 are the year. For example in the below oval, it's the 8th week of 2014. So this tire is ready to go to preschool... If you don't see an oval, look on the other sidewall. It's also possible for really old tires to not be marked (but those would have to be... ancient). As tires sit, whether on the bike or off, the heat cycles from cooling down at night and warming up during the day...
